DISTRICT 9 REVIEW.

Journal Entry: Sun Nov 22, 2009, 6:14 PM

DEAR LORD, I SAW DISTRICT 9 YESTERDAY. It was amazing. So great. It was probably one of the most unique alien movies I've seen in a long time. And, amazingly, the effects were really good, which is impressive considering the budget was only around 30 million. For those who don't know, District 9 is a movie about aliens that in the 80s a mother-ship hovers over Johannesburg, South Africa. The aliens end up living there, but they are kept in an area called District 9. It's a metaphor for apartheid, but it's actually written in a way to where if you want to you can ignore that and just see it as a cool movie of what could happen if aliens landed on earth in a way where it couldn't be covered up.
SOME SPOILERS START HERE:
It was a unique take in that despite the fact that the aliens had this advanced weaponry, they were subduable. And in the end, all the government cared about were the weapons. You see, the alien weapons were actually made to where they were partly biological, so only someone with alien DNA can use them. This is very relevant, because the main character, Wikus (Pronounced with a 'v' noise, like "Vikus") works for the MNU, the company in charge of controlling the aliens. Wikus just got a promotion and is in charge of serving the aliens eviction notices, because they are about to be relocated to District 10. It shows him doing this, and it shows him casually doing terrible things to the aliens. A good example is that he finds a shack full of their eggs, and starts casually joking about "aborting" them while pulling out the tubes that keep the eggs alive, and while he does this you can here babies inside the eggs screaming. So yeah, there are almost no likable humans in this movie. Anyway, as he does this he gets sprayed with an alien fluid that you find out actually starts turning him into an alien. MNU takes him to this place where you discover they experiment on the aliens, and they show him very graphically being experimented on. They find him valuable, because he can now use all the advanced weaponry. A lot of stuff happens after that but I'm actually not going to talk about it.
END SPOILERS
All in all it was a brilliant and frighteningly realistic take on some horrible things and ideas. I would definitely recommend it to any sci-fi fan, but I would keep in mind that there are some very graphically violent scenes, and some scenes that aren't necessarily violent but are incredibly disturbing. (TVTropes would call them "High-Octane Nightmare Fuel" scenes.) So, if you are bothered by such things I would hold off, or if your parents are strict or you have small children in the house I would recommend watching it at a friends house when it comes out on DVD. (You know who you are. Winkwink.)

SO YEAH. WATCH IT. SERIOUSLY.
